We understand that hair and scalp conditions can be very sensitive problems. Our trichologists will offer solutions to your hair loss and scalp issues while maintaining a holistic approach to both the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.
What Is Trichology?
Trichology is a branch of medical and cosmetic study and practice that focuses on hair and scalp diseases. Hair and scalp specialists are called trichologists, and they get to the root cause of your hair loss, hair breakage as well as conditions affecting the scalp. A trichologist can offer a variety of treatments and advice, focusing on mainly addressing the cause as well as the symptoms of your condition.
Common Hair Loss and Scalp Disorder
Androgenetic alopecia is a common type of hair loss that can be experienced by both men and women. In men, this condition is also called male-pattern baldness. The hairline recedes over time to form a distinct "M" shape.
Telogen effluvium is a scalp disorder that results in excessive shedding of resting or telogen hair after some shock to the system. Hair loss is temporary and new hair can continue to grow.
Tinea capitis is a condition that causes:
• Hair Loss (Bald Spots)
• Broken Hairs (Resembles Black Dots)
• Fragile Hair That Is Easily Pulled Out
• Open Sores
• Swollen Scalp
• Neck Lymph Nodes
Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA)
CCCA is a type of scarring alopecia on the scalp that causes permanent hair loss. It is the most common kind of scarring hair loss experienced by black women.
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that results in hair loss. Your body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the healthy cells of your hair follicles.
Alopecia barbae is a specific type of alopecia areata that affects the beard. It usually appears suddenly, and you start to lose beard hair in small circular patches.
Traction Alopecia is gradual hair loss that happens when pulling force is constantly applied to the hair. This is often caused by frequently wearing your hair in a particularly tight ponytail, pigtails, or braids.
Folliculitis is a common skin condition caused by a bacterial or fungal infection. The hair follicles become inflamed, which results in sore red bumps.
Dandruff is a condition that causes the scalp to flake and is often accompanied by itching. The exact cause is unknown. However, various factors increase the risk. Dandruff is not caused by poor hygiene, but if you don’t wash or brush your hair often, it may be more visible.
One of the hormones that affect hair loss is DHT. It miniaturizes hair follicles, causing the hairs to stop growing and eventually fall out. This hair loss is called androgenic alopecia or female-pattern hair loss (FPHL).
Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic form of eczema that appears on the body where there are a lot of oil-producing (sebaceous) glands, such as, the upper back, nose, and scalp. The cause of this condition has not yet been identified. However, genes and hormones play a role. Microorganisms that live on the skin naturally can also be a factor in seborrheic dermatitis.
